Sweat

The "human cost" of deindustrialization in sweat

From 2000 - 2008 something horrible happened in the United states' economy the "great recession" which is a play on the words for "great depression". "Sweat" the play is taking place during the deindustrialization.  The story surrounds itself with a group of people that work in the same industry.  Each of them had experienced some kind of unfairness during their years in the company. Stan, for example, has worked on the floor with machines, one unfortunate time he injured his leg leaving him "cippled" and the company hasn't fixed the machine until some later years.  None of them have moved from the floor they worked on for more than 20 years.  It wasn't until Cynthia moved from the floor to management, at the same time Tracy found out that the company is planning to cut people off and hire new workers.  Sometime later Cynthia tells her friends that the magn]ment wants to ship out half of the machines which will lead to firing people who work with those machines.  NAFTA or North American Free Trade Agreement is often mentioned in the play as an "agreement that eliminates all tariff barriers to trade and investment between the United States, Canada, and Mexico" research. In the play it says that the company can't pay to operate it in the United States anymore, meaning that paying the workers will be cut even more than "60 %" to save money but work more hours plus move to Mexico where they can operate a factory with much less money.  If the union started to rebel the factories would strike them down by hanging a sign that they are not welcome.  So no payment, no job, no nothing what can that affect the people who have worked on the plant for more than two generations.  Tracie turned to use drugs, and Cynthia who wanted life for the better worked three jobs to try to sustain herself at least somehow. If the company is leaving that means they will abandon the shell of the factories that will start to rust, that's where the term "rust belt" comes from. It will be a constant reminder for those workers who once worked there. The city will have a lot of people who are unemployed, also the population will shrink cause there are no more jobs to rotate the economy of the city. So unemployment will leave people homeless and with addictions as we can see in the play.
